Rechargeable heated clothing is on the rise. Rechargeable heated gloves, rechargeable heated socks, rechargeable heated slippers, rechargeable heated jackets and rechargeable heated vests are now incorporating some of the most cutting edge heat technology available. If you have done your research, you will see that there have been companies in and out of the rechargeable heated clothing scene since 2006. There are very few that have made it past the 5 year mark and continue to make products and update with new technology. How do you know which voltage of heated clothing is the best for you?
When looking at power sources, you need to know one thing. Is the heated garment I am looking at, made to run off of a rechargeable battery or hardwire in to an electrical system? Now to further clarify in case you are still confused, get on your thinking cap and read on.
12 Volt Heated Clothing has traditionally been for motorcycle riders
By in large, 12 Volt heated clothing made specific for motorcycle riders isn’t intended to run off of a rechargeable battery. The 12 Volt Motorcycle heated clothing is usually powered by hooking up a wiring harness to a motorcycles electrical system and using connecting wires to then produce heat. The benefit to this is extremely high heat output and greater coverage due to the large amount of energy you are connected to. The downside of 12V heated clothing is that it does require you to be tethered to a wiring system that is connected to the power source. In short, the 12 Volt Heated Clothing items for motorcycle riding are awesome on heat and extremely poor on portability and general daily use.
7 Volt is perfect for portable, rechargeable heat
Now let’s look at the 7 Volt or rechargeable battery powered heated clothing that is currently on the market. If you look at companies like Volt Heated Clothing, you will notice that the 7V portable heated products are the primary focus. This makes the Volt product line suited and perfect for not any one specific activity, they are great for everyday use. Typically these 7V items will have a rechargeable battery that will fit in a pocket on the product somewhere making it easy to incorporate and use day in and day out.
The major benefit to the 7V heated products is that they are rechargeable and portable. This allows the consumer to use their heated clothing anywhere they want. The downside is that with less voltage you get a decreased coverage area from a 12 Volt system.
5 Volt is extremely versatile and replaceable looking in to the future
When looking at 5 Volt heated clothing, the trend continues but there is a new added benefit. As the voltage of the power source decreases, so does the heat coverage. The major benefit to the 5V products is that 5 Volt power banks or batteries are extremely easy to find at most large retailers. These batteries usually charge and discharge through a USB and Micro USB connector. The 5V batteries that you use to power your heated clothing item can usually double as a backup charger for your cell phone given you have a USB charging cord for your cell phone.
3 Volt power has its place among the most elite heated clothing voltages
The 3 Volt Heated Clothing items are primarily footwear like heated socks and heated slippers. The heat for products of this nature is usually focused at the bottom of the foot in one pad. This pad can heat anywhere from your toes all the way back to your heel or just the toe area. Volt Heated Clothing uses the same heat pad for all of its heated footwear and it provides heat from the tip of your toes all the way back to the beginning of the heel. The downside of a 3V battery powered product is that heat coverage is decreased once again. The benefit to the 3V system is that you only need that amount of coverage for your feet and the batteries are a little cheaper so as to keep the MSRP as low as possible.
We hope that this information has helped clarify the different voltages used by heated clothing companies and what voltage might be best for you. If you are still unclear or have questions regarding this article, please contact VoltHeat.com at 888 518 6871 and we would be happy to further explain the products and help guide you in finding the correct heated clothing item for you. One thing to keep in mind with the different voltages is how it affects heat coverage and the wide variety of heat configurations and pad placement. That gives us a great idea on the next Volt blog post to add to the VolHeat.com blog spot!

What is it about getting older and our body’s natural ability to keep us warm diminishing? Being cold is becoming a more frequent phenomenon the older I get. Whats worse is I don’t enjoy the battle as much as I used to either. I would rather just stay comfortably warm and forget about being cold. I am starting to get a clearer picture of why we tend to migrate towards warmer climates the older we get. What are we to do if we live in a colder region and can’t afford to travel to warmer climates for late fall through early spring?
We could turn up the heat in the house but that can be expensive. We can get the wood stove burning hotter longer but then the house can become unbearably hot for everyone else in the room. What if we had the ability to change our own personal climate to fit our needs? What if we had the ability to control our own thermal comfort with the push of a button? That could help eliminate expensive power bills and running visitors out of the house with extremely warm rooms.
That is why I purchased my first heated garment from Volt Heated Clothing. I want to be in control of my thermal comfort and forget about being cold. One question I get asked a lot when someone notices that I am wearing a Volt heated vest is what activity I purchased it for. Did you get it for skiing? Did you get it for hunting? Did you get it for golf? The answer is no, although you can use it for those three activities and a wide variety more. My answer to the question of, “What did you get it for???” is always the same, “I got this vest for the activity of life”… just plain old everyday living.
Now when I get cold, even when I am inside my house, I can get a battery off the charger (I have multiple batteries for my Volt products), plug it in and turn up the heat. Within seconds I can start to feel the Zero Layer Heat System warming up and sending soothing heat straight into my body’s core. The first Volt vest I purchased was back in 2013 and I still use it to this day. I have added quite a few others as well with my most frequently used item being the Gen III Heated Slippers. Suffering from cold feet while sitting in a warm house is frustrating and uncomfortable. Not anymore, these slippers have truly been a blessing to me and my cold feet. I enjoy the heat so much that I find myself looking forward to getting home from work, getting all of my chores done and sitting down with my feet up as they get soothed by the perfect amount of heat the Gen III Heated Slippers give out.
Sometimes I can be the toughest critic when it comes to products of this nature. The Volt product line has stood up to the task and in my eyes came out on top. The Volt products are stylish, durable, warm and well-priced when you look at some of the other products on the market. Although I am getting older and my body doesn’t resist the cold like it used to, I have found new warmth and comfort with Volt’s wide variety of heated apparel and accessories. When the question gets asked, “What activities are the Volt products best suited for?” the answer is simple for me, “They are perfect fit for the activity of life!”

Whether you’re a construction worker, a carpenter, a lumberjack, or work in any of the other countless professions that require you to work outdoors, no matter what the weather, you should be thinking about staying warm in winter temperatures. Allowing your hands and feet to get cold can cause circulatory problems, and spending extended amounts of time exposed to the elements can cause and exacerbate cold and flu symptoms. For most, these few easy tips will help you to stay warm in winter, no matter what you are doing.
1. Battery Heated Clothing
One of the advantages of working outside today is that you don’t really have to bundle up to stay warm; you just need battery heated clothing. Volt Heats selection of heated clothing includes battery heated gloves, heated jackets, heated vests, and heated footwear. You can use each of these to comfortably adjust the temperature of your clothing so that you can stay warm while working outdoors. While you might not need a heated jacket liner if you’re doing manual labor, the heated socks and heated gloves can keep your hands dexterous at temperatures below 53 degrees, and can protect your extremities from frostbite in severe weather.
2. Have a Meal before Going Outdoors
It’s very important to have a good meal before you go outdoors. Studies show that heavy meals including proteins from beans and mushrooms, meat, and the fibers from whole grains and wheat (such as in brown or whole grain bread) are excellent providers of heat. Light vegetables and fruits will provide less heat, while starchy vegetables including rice, potatoes, beets, and turnips can be very warming.
3. Layers Not Bundles
Probably the first rule of dressing for the outdoors is to dress in layers rather than one thick item of clothing. Try wearing a form fitting bottom layer, thermal if possible, and maybe the Volt Heated Base Layer with your normal clothes on top. If it is raining or snowing, make sure you wear a water resistant outer layer, and consider wearing wool which stays warm even when wet.
4. Wear Boots
A good pair of boots will protect your feet and help you stay warm in winter temperatures, especially if you pair them with a pair of battery heated socks. Check for work or hiking boots with thick soles, felt lining if possible, and a high calf. The boots should protect your feet from any snow, prevent air from escaping around your ankle, and provide you the traction you might need on icy ground. Remember that keeping warm will protect your body from harsh weather. Even if you just want something to keep your hands warm, you should look into a few good ways to stay warm. Battery heated gloves, heated socks, or any of the items from the Volt Resistance line of lightweight and comfortable line of heated clothing could be perfect for you.

If you like to hunt then you probably know that your hands, your feet, and your body can get cold in the winter months. Most animals come out during the coldest parts of the day, such as early in the morning, or in the evening after the sun has gone down. You might also have to expose yourself to chilling winds by climbing trees or positioning yourself above your quarry. While thermal clothing, extra layers, and heavy gloves might be the answer, heated clothing such as battery heated gloves are a better option for the hunter who wants to stay warm, and retain flexibility in the hands.
The Cold and Your Health
You’ve probably noticed that you lose dexterity and even touch sensitivity in the cold. This is in part due to a natural reaction of the body, withdrawing blood from the outer layer of the skin, and therefore reducing the amount of oxygen. Studies show that outside temperatures must be 53 degrees or higher in order to perform basic dexterous movements with the hands, but often, winter temperatures are much lower. Adding heavy layers of gloves can help to combat this, but they can also decrease dexterity as well. Most people are also prone to suffering from cold damage including frost nip and frost bite starting at the extremities. Frost nip is when the extremities such as the tips of the ears, the fingers, and toes start to go white and lose sensation. Frost bite is much more serious and can be seen by the bluing of the extremity.
Using Battery Heated Clothing to Stay Warm
Battery heated clothing is an excellent way to stay warm no matter what the temperature outside. Volt Heat’s line of clothing including battery heated gloves use rechargeable lithium ion batteries to heat clothing up to 150 degrees, allowing you to warm your body, or your extremities with gloves or a jacket liner. Importantly, the heating elements in our clothing are integrated using our patented Zero Layer design so that you can experience warm clothing without bulky layers that hinder movement. Volt Heat’s heated clothing comes in a subtle black that won’t clash with your camouflage gear, and can be worn elsewhere if you work outdoors, go skiing, or anything else that exposes your hands to the cold.

A winter hunting trip can be one of the best times to actually find and hunt deer, bear, and other animals, but it can also be one of the worst times for cold related damage including illness, discomfort, and frostbite! If you want to stay safe and warm on your next hunting trip, you have to pack for a winter trip, be prepared for colder temperatures than you prefer, and consider some of the best stay-warm gear in the business.
Thermal Underclothing
Whether you’re going with traditional long johns or battery heated clothing, warm thermal underclothing can make sure you enjoy your hunting trip rather than shivering through it. Consider purchasing a pair of long johns to wear to bed, and a 7v battery heated vest liner or 7v heated base layer to wear while you’re standing up, or worse, sitting motionless in a tree waiting for deer.
A Heavy Jacket
A heavy jacket is also important for winter and early spring hunting trips. Weather can change quickly so even if the temperatures are relatively warm, you should be prepared for the worst. A good jacket is waterproof, features a hood, and has pockets where you can hide your hands. If you don’t want to lug around pounds of fleece or sacrifice mobility for warmth, you can try one of Volt Heats battery heated jackets or vests to eliminate additional layers of clothing.
A Warm Hat to Go Under Your Cap
You don’t want to give up your orange safety cap, but you don’t want your ears to freeze either. Invest in either brightly colored ear muffs or an orange beanie, or purchase a black hat to go under your orange cap. In either case, avoid camouflage for safety reasons. A good cap will keep your ears and your head warm, and protected from any wind or snow.
0 Degree Pad Rated Sleeping Bags
If you have just any old summer sleeping bag ready to take on your winter hunting trip, you might want to think again. Sleeping bags are rated according to how warm they keep you in the cold and most standard sleeping bags aren’t very warm in extremely cold temperatures. Consider purchasing a 0 degree rated sleeping bag to keep you warm while you sleep.
Waterproof Tent or Cover
Another important consideration is that it might rain or snow while you are out hunting. If you do not have some means of staying dry, you could freeze. Purchase a waterproof tent, or a large waterproof cover that you can use to shield yourself from the rain. Anyone who is planning to set up a camp can consider the tent while anyone who plans on spending a lot of time hiking and in trees should consider the cover.
Gloves
Gloves protect the hands from cold temperatures but they should be chosen carefully. Gloves that are too thick will inhibit movement and make it hard to actually pull the trigger when you do finally catch a glimpse of a deer. The best gloves are thermal and lightweight and do not get in the way of movement. Many hunters are more comfortable with battery heated gloves because they are thin enough to allow flexible fingers while still providing a great deal of warmth. Volt Heat has a few different styles to meet your needs. Check out the 7v Tactical Gloves or the 7v Frosty Gloves as they both are form fitting with no added bulk. Hunters who plan on fishing as well might want to consider purchasing our 7v Heated Mitts which are easy to take on and off. They are also waterproof and will help keep your hands dry as well.
Warm Socks
The feet are one of the most vulnerable extremities of the body so it is very important to bring along warm socks. Consider packing two pairs of thick wool socks per day you plan on being out. Likely you will want to change your cold and possibly wet socks when you get in at the end of the evening in exchange for a dry pair. You can also consider purchasing a pair of our battery heated sock liners to help keep your feet warm in the coldest of conditions.
Staying warm in the cold is about preparation. While not every cold weather situation is extreme, it is always better to be prepared to help stay warm, and of course, comfortable!
June 10, 2016
From hunting to riding a motorcycle, outdoor enthusiasts are experiencing winter chills, and battery heated clothing is helping them to stay warm. Now, skiers can take advantage of heated clothing as well including waterproof snow gloves to keep your hands flexible on the poles, and heated socks to keep your feet warm. Anyone doing an outdoor activity is susceptible to the cold, but skiers are more so. High altitudes, snow, cold, and possible damp from sweat, all add up to cold hands and feet on the slopes, but you don’t have to live with it, and you shouldn’t. Cold can be dangerous, causing problems including discomfort, poor circulation, loss of feeling in the extremities, and in severe cases, frostbite.
Why Battery Heated Clothing?
Plug in electric heated clothing has been popular with motorcyclists for years, but for anyone wanting the convenience of portability, or the ability to use the heated gloves, socks, or jacket liners away from a power source, battery operated heated clothing is a much better way to go. Battery heated gloves can keep the hands soft and supple while hunting or skiing under extreme conditions, a heated vest liner can keep cold from penetrating a jacket, despite high winds, and with water proof heated snow gloves (part of our Volt Heat line) you can stay warm and comfortable while you Ski. Best of all, our battery heated clothing line can keep you warm to and from the slopes as well. Try wearing battery heated slippers to warm your feet on the way to your lodge, or while you relax and enjoy yourself.
How it Works
Our heated clothing utilizes top of the line 7v heating technology to gently warm clothing. Using conductive fibers and insulating material, a rechargeable lithium ion battery carefully sends power to warm the heated clothing to up to 150 degrees of gentle heat. Controls allow you to adjust the settings to just a few degrees above your body temperature, or warm enough to actively warm the skin. Battery heated clothing can help to keep you warm while you hit the slopes and it can also protect you from damaging cold. Low levels of active heat can keep your extremities, and your body, comfortable while you have fun. And of course, you’ll never have to suffer from cold hands or feet again! Interested?
